Concerns Over China-Pakistan Military Cooperation

Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor has expressed significant worries regarding the escalating military and economic collaboration between China and Pakistan. Speaking in Colombia, he emphasized the potential threats this poses to regional stability and India's national security. Leading an all-party delegation aimed at conveying India's strong stance against terrorism globally, Tharoor launched a fierce critique of Pakistan. He pointed out that much of the military equipment supplied by China to Pakistan is not intended for defense but rather for offensive operations.

China's Role in Pakistan's Defense

Tharoor highlighted that China is responsible for providing 81% of Pakistan's military hardware. He clarified that India's concerns are not about Pakistan's development efforts but rather the terrorism that often accompanies it. He stated, 'We recognize that China supplies a significant portion of Pakistan's military arsenal, much of which is not for defense but for aggression. While every nation has the right to pursue its interests, our issue lies with the terrorism directed at us.'

Historical Context of the Indus Waters Treaty

Tharoor also referenced the Indus Waters Treaty, which India offered to Pakistan in the 1960s as a gesture of goodwill. He lamented that this goodwill has been repeatedly undermined by terrorist activities over the past forty years. Consequently, he noted that the Indian government has decided to suspend the treaty until Pakistan demonstrates a commitment to the spirit of cooperation outlined in its preamble.

Criticism of Pakistan's Terrorism Support

Further criticizing Pakistan, Tharoor presented evidence of its involvement in terrorism, including a photograph from the funeral of a terrorist killed in an Indian operation, which showed the attendance of senior military and police officials from Pakistan. He remarked, 'The presence of these officials at such events underscores the deep complicity between the terrorists and those who support them, providing resources and safe havens for their operations.'
